Hjalmer O. Lindberg never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on November 8, 1917 in Wisconsin. His mother was also born in Wisconsin and his father was born in Sweden. His father worked as a farmer. Hjalmer had three older sisters, two younger sisters, and two younger brothers, one of whom also served in WW2. By 1940 Hjalmer had completed six years of school and was working on the family farm.
He enlisted in the army on November 28, 1942. He became a private first class in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division.
The 94th ID arrived in France in September 1944. It's first assignment was to engage German units cut off in Brittany while more experienced units chased the fleeing Germans across France. It didn't join the main fighting until January 7, 1945 facing the Siegfried Line south of Wasserbillig. Pfc. Lindberg was killed in action on January 20 when a battalion strong attack on Orscholz was repulsed and resulted in the loss of most of two companies.
His grave is at Lakeview Cemetery in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin.
